Got both answers for the weekend. I liked Saturday's puzzle that ended with BROKE. I solved in four, but made a stupid error by wasting my third guess when I moved the R out of the second spot even though I already had the R as green from my previous guess. Oops. Sunday's UNZIP was a tough one, with the unusual letter Z in the middle throwing everything off. I was able to work my way to the answer by getting the UN prefix and working from there. I solved it in five, but again made the silly error of moving around letters that I already had as green and wasting a guess. I'll blame making that mistake twice in a row on my weekend brain.
One thing that stuck me as I was reading the NYT Games Wordle Review was that one of the recent authors was dismayed that A/E was a combination for an answer. The general point was that there are a whole lot of A/E words and the reviewer didn't think it helped to get to the solution. I don't know that I fully agree, but I do find that when A or E isn't in the answer, I take longer to solve the puzzle. Nothing bogs down my train of thought like staring at the screen wishing I could use an A/E word, but knowing it won't work. It's like trying to not think about elephants when someone says elephants. The point is I'm rethinking the efficacy of opening with an A/E word since I know I can circle back to those letters in subsequent guesses.
I open with CLOUD as my first guess today. I get yellows for O and D. Hmm, now I need to decide I go hunting for a second vowel or for the locations of the two letters I have in hand. I decide to work with the O and D and type in ROWDY for my second guess. This is a swing for the fences guess in that two of three new letters aren't really going to be helpful in terms of eliminating letters for subsequent guesses, but the R is a good letter and I want to find the locations of O and D. Besides, all my ROWDY friends are here for Monday, um, afternoon. That works? Maybe?
Okay, not the answer, no new letters, still don't know where O and D go. I want to D first, and realize DOWRY probably would've been better than ROWDY, but the former MNF theme song swayed me into the ROWDY guess. If I put D up front, I have to have O in either the fourth or fifth spot. This gives me some options: DEPOT and DIVOT stand out. I decide to deploy the E since it's the more common letter and guess DEPOT.
Wow, D is the first letter, T is in the word, and O must be at the end. Could it be DITTO? That's the only thing I can think of that fits what I've found so far. C'mon, Swayze, don't let me down. DITTO is correct because the chemistry of Swayze and Moore can't be denied.
