I briefly considered starting with EAGLE today because I nearly had a solve in two yesterday. I thought it would be a funny little bit to do, but once I typed it in, the double E just isn't something that I can get behind for an opening guess. So the joke dies. I thought for a moment or two and decided to use GRAND, which gave me yellow tiles for N and D. This is an interesting result because I would have thought those letters would either go together in a five-letter word or would not be in the same five-letter word. Deny is the first thing that comes to mind, but since it is too short, I run through denies, denied, and denial in my head even though they are all too long. But I like the DE to start these words, and it leads me to DENIM. DENIM gives me yellows for D, E, N, and I.
WHAT? This result seems like a joke. I just can't figure out what the heck is going on here. But it does seem like an interesting challenge. I start playing with the letters, starting my words with E. I get ENIDS and ENIDY, but those all seem like fake words. Using I gives me IDENT. Nope, I'm not hitting enter on that. NIDES? Oh, that could be SNIDE, which feels like a good guess. And it mostly is, but it's not the right word. The S is gray, but I do find that the N goes in the second slot. I look at ENIDS again. Is that like a bug or something? Then I realize the D can't go there, but I do know where it has to go based on my other guesses. So I have -ND--. I look at the letters and see INDEX for a solve in four. This is a good result for a word with a unique like X in it. After that second guess had so many yellows, I was hoping I'd be able to get a birdie, but, honestly, X would never have come to mind as a letter to use in that guess. X, Q, and probably Z are letters that I don't I would use that early in a solve, so I'm perfectly fine getting a solve in four.
